Blogger's Quilt Festival Spring 2013: Random Containment

Hello! I'm thrilled to be participating once again in the Blogger's Quilt Festival hosted by Amy's Creative Side. It's always a good time - plenty of inspiration and meeting new blog friends.  I even found some local quilters through the festival that I hadn't known before so it's definitely a positive event! I expect I'll be tough to drag from the computer as I check out all the fabulous entries...

My entry for Spring 2013:

Name: Random Containment
Finished : ~68"square
Category: Throw quilt

I had done a tutorial on random piecing for the Saskatoon Modern Quilt Guild and then wondered what to do with the product.  I ordered up some Kona Ash and decided to let my random pieces all where they may, so to speak.  To give the centre a little something, I improv pieced all the scraps.  The result is that this quilt ended up with less than a full handful of trimmings and scraps leftover! Yay!
(Please forgive the folds - it was a few days before I had photo-worthy light and helpers at the same time!)

I wanted this piece to embrace "modern"as much as possible so I went with very dense quilting using 40w orange thread and  mostly organic straight lines. I figured that the irregularity of the straight-ish lines would add more texture than pin-straight. And I'd be less likely to tear my hair out trying to achieve pin-straight.

The back is pieced entirely with scraps and stash.
Oops!  This was before the label went on...
This quilt was a challenge for me in that I'd never used a contrasting thread colour, done such dense quilting on something so large, or gotten terribly comfortable with purple before it.  I'm quite happy with how it turned out - the texture of the lines, the improv nature of it, and its modern aesthetic.
The early stages...

It's also a challenge to get things done on a deadline when the sun is finally shining and your sewing space is wee.

And just a reminder.... Check the back of your work frequently.  Trust me. Ripping ten 68" lines.... not terribly fun.  Picking up tiny threads from ripping ten 68" lines - even less fun. Thank heavens for lint brushes!

Thanks for stopping by! Thank you, too, to Amy and the wonderful sponsors of this festival.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. :-)

  7. I love it!! I am working on some straight line quilting too and let me just say, you are awesome! Even if you had to unpick a bunch, your lines are amazing. It is hard to wrangle quilts under our machines and then sew a zillion lines. My hat is off to you. It is just lovely!

  8. Reallly cool Carly (and you just had to get a hockey plug in there, right? hahahaha) And can I say how much I adore those hedgehogs. Super cute!

  25. Always such a good read Carly. Your quilting is beautiful and I know how long that takes. On my last quilt, I quilted the top corner to the back. Bummer. Enjoy the festival

  26. very nice quilt. thank you for showing your process, it's fun to see. And I recognize that struggle with the bunching on the back. Have you tried spray basting? I've never gone back to pins. I love your negative space. What gray is that? and your choice of quilting thread is fun too.

  27. I really love the scrappiness of this quilt. The colors all play so nicely together. You did a beautiful job.

  29. Love the composition and the quilting is amazing. Great job!

  30. Beautiful quilt! I love purple, but would never pair it with orange. However, your quilt looks great, the quilting helps tie everything together, and the neutrals help balance the bright colors.

  31. your quilt is beautiful. I feel for you having to unpick so many rows, what a nuisance - at least it wasn't white thread on white. Did you use alternate direction for each new quilting row?

    ReplyDelete
  32. This is beautiful! Love the colors, the randomness in the center, the orange straight-line quilting (and the hedgehog print on the back!). Really cool!

  33. This is a beautiful quilt. The composition and the color selections are just perfect.

  34. Love the straight line quilting and using the orange thread-wow!!

  35. Very beautiful! These blocks remind me of Jacquie Gering's work - fun and fabulous improv! And, her fav color is orange. :)

  37. Love the quilting and the central improv piece. Well done.

  38. Hi, Carly. The random certainly gives interesting design options. Lovely fabrics you used and the quilting is perfect--so effective. You prove that it's not a quilt until it's quilted! Thanks so much for stopping by my blog and commenting.

  39. Lovely quilting. Did it take you long? (apart from the unpicking) I love the colours too.

Thank you for your comments on my quilt.

  40. This is a great modern quilt - love the use of the 'ash' as a background. I'm keen on the organic quilting. Did you swap which end you started at?

  41. Once again a great quilt. I remember your entry last year. It was great.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I love it. Your Randomness(such a word) is what pulled me into the quilt. Love the colors also. Great job

    ReplyDelete
  45. Fabulous! The randomness in piecing is something that always makes a quilt more interesting, in my opinion. ;o) I love it! You've given me a whole new appreciation of the colour (can you tell I'm also Canadian? ;o) purple. Looks smashing with pops of orange and set into Kona Ash. Wow. It's eye candy!

  46. I love it - the central block is incredible!

  47. loving purple and improv right now ...this is fantastic!xoxo

  53. Wow is this a beauty! I love the quilting and would never have guessed that you didn't mark them with a ruler.

The orange and purple together are terrific! Nice job!

  54. Love the colours! Just visiting from Shari's blog and was intrigued by the name of your blog :-)

  55. Such a pretty finish, Carly, after seeing that wonderful random piecing tutorial you did. The quilt colors are great, and your straight line quilting is so nice. I can tell you spent a lot of time doing it. I've just discovered (used for the first time) 505 basting spray, and may never go back to pin-basting again, unless it's necessary. So much more freedom for FMQing without having to stop to unpin pins. Thanks for sharing your finish. It's just great.

  56. I just love the playfulness in your quilt! Random, but not. Lots to keep the eye happy. And that hedgehog fabric - too cute!!!! My granddaughter would faint with pleasure if she saw that :*)

  57. Love the colors in this quilt and the random piecing is so fun. This is really a perfect way to use up colorful scraps. And the straight line quilting looks so good.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Kona Ash is one of my favorites! I really love the straight line quilting on this. I too have had to rip out quilting like this and it is not fun... It seems like straight lines should be easier than they are!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Beautiful. Love the use of colour, and the straight line quilting is perfect for this quilt!

    ReplyDelete
  60. I love the floating effect of these blocks! Such a lovely quilt! :)

  61. I have been LOVING purple lately, which is odd because it has never been a favorite color of mine. But I am glad to see it in your quilt with the gray and orange - such an awesome color combination!

  62. Love the colors and your quilting! Beautiful!

    ReplyDelete
  63. This is gorgeous! I love the abstract-ness of it, and the red/orange thrown in!

  64. Great finish! Your colors are wonderful.:)

    ReplyDelete
  65. love the colors, isn't it a wonder what thread does for quilting? Yours is really lovely.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I love it! My brain sees something different everytime I look at the improv blocks, from a map of the world to blobs of spilled jam. Two questions: what does the quilt feel like once it's so densely quilted? and, what do you use the spoon for during basting? :)

    ReplyDelete
  67. What an awesome quilt! I love how organically it came together. I feel like I need to embrace randomness a bit more in my projects if this is the kind of result I could achieve. Question: What are you using there to hold the quilt in a roll while you are doing the actual quilting? I need whatever that is!

    ReplyDelete
  68. Well done! I'm in awe of your straight-line quilting Isn't it the WORST when you discover puckers. such a time suck. But a beautiful result!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Absolutely stunning quilt! Congratulations!

    ReplyDelete
  70. Wow, what a great quilt! And I really enjoyed your improv tutorial too. That's a great way to start playing with it. The quilting looks fab! I never would have thought to use orange thread - love it!

  77. How stunning! I love the look of this quilt!

    ReplyDelete
  78. Love the fabrics and the quilting on the quilt. I have sewn folds into the back of a quilt before, but I was free motion quilting bubbles. Taking the time to pick out all that thread is annoying to say the least. Stunning quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  79. This quilt looks awesome! Great way to use up all the scraps!
Going forward I'm doing this with my quilts as well.

Oh, picking up quilting definitely not fun!

Your final product looks awesome though!

  86. 1. Hand over the hedgehogs - pretty pleeeeease!!! They are too awesome. 2. The piece in the middle of your quilt - the large purple tie dyed looking one - I am in love with this. It totally draws me in. 3. Who are you cheering for?

    ReplyDelete
  87. Absolutely love this quilt. The hedgehog fabric is adorable. And I love that you quilted it in orange!

    ReplyDelete
  88. Orange and purple, complimentary colours, how very citric/sugar of you! I think the orange thread was a bold and inspired choice. I'd like to see more boldness in quilts at the moment, and this hints at that. Great work!

  89. This is awesome .... I would like for you to stop, you're very clever :-)
